The birth star is the nakshatra the Moon was crossing when you were born — one of twenty-seven, each a quarter the width of a zodiac sign. This gives you the nakshatra, its pada and its ruling planet, and it still answers if you do not know your birth time.

- I don't know my birth time. Can I still use this?
- Yes, and that is the main difference between this and a rising sign calculator. The Moon covers one or two nakshatras in a day, so the date alone usually narrows your birth star to two candidates, and this page names both with the exact hour the Moon crossed between them. A rising sign runs through all 27 nakshatras in the same 24 hours — which is why a calculator that asks for your birth time genuinely needs it.
- What is a pada?
- A quarter of a nakshatra. Each nakshatra spans 13°20′ of the zodiac and divides into four padas of 3°20′. It is the finer address inside the birth star, and most free tools stop at the nakshatra and never give it.
- Which zodiac does this use?
- The sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the same one every Cosmiclogy reading uses. Nakshatras have no mainstream tropical reading — everyone who computes one computes it sidereally — so unlike a sun sign or a rising sign there is no second answer here to reconcile.
- Is the Janma Nakshatra the Moon's?
- Yes. The birth star is the nakshatra the Moon occupied at your birth, and that is the headline answer. The Sun and the Ascendant sit in nakshatras too and this page gives you both, because the same calculation already produced them — but they are not what "your nakshatra" usually means.
- Do you keep my birth details?
- No. No account, no email, nothing written down. The date, time and place work out one answer and are then gone.
