How a name number is worked out

In Chaldean numerology every letter carries a number from 1 to 8, given by the sound it makes rather than its place in the alphabet. Add every letter of your name together and you have the compound number. Add the digits of that total until one number from 1 to 9 is left, and you have your Name Number.

ASHA RAO → A 1 · S 3 · H 5 · A 1 = 10 · R 2 · A 1 · O 7 = 10
10 + 10 = 20 → 2 + 0 = 2

No letter carries a 9. Chaldean numerology holds that number apart, so a name can add up to 9 but no single letter is worth it.

The compound matters as well as the single number. Two names can both reduce to 5 from different totals, and Chaldean numerology reads each total in its own right, so this calculator shows you both.

Your name gives one number and your birth date gives another. The Life Path Number Calculator works out the one from your date.

Questions people ask

How is a name number calculated?
Each letter of your name carries a number from 1 to 8, given by the sound it makes. Add every letter together to get the compound number, then add the digits of that total until a single number from 1 to 9 remains. That single number is your Name Number.
Why is my number different on another website?
Most free name calculators use the Pythagorean system, which numbers the alphabet in order from 1 to 9. This one uses the Chaldean system, which numbers each letter by its sound. The same name can add up differently in the two, so neither site is wrong; they are reading two different methods.
Why does no letter carry the number 9?
In Chaldean numerology 9 is held apart and given to no letter. A name can still add up to 9, but no single letter is worth 9.
What is the compound number?
It is the full total of your letters before it is reduced. Chaldean numerology reads it alongside the single number, because two names that both reduce to 5 can arrive there from different totals and carry a different shade.
Which name should I type?
The name you go by day to day, the one people call you and you sign with. If that differs from the name on your birth certificate, try both and read them side by side.
Can a name number change?
Yes. Your birth date is fixed, but a name can be changed or spelled differently, and its number changes with it. That is why the name is the one number people choose with care.

Choosing a name for a business, a stage name, or a different spelling?
